In this episode of Beyond the Label, I pivot briefly to look at the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ apology and attempt to take accountability in mental health for survivors of sexual abuse and how inappropriate labeling and misdiagnosis has created harm. I think it is a starting point for a larger conversation about the power of psychiatric labels.
Labels can help us name experiences, access care, and find understanding—but they can also shape how others see us, how professionals interpret us, and eventually, how we see ourselves.
What happens when a diagnosis stops being a description of someone’s experience and starts becoming an explanation for the whole person?
This episode explores stigma, diagnostic language, accountability, and why good mental health care requires us to remain curious about the person who exists beyond the label.
