Family Support
for Autistic Adults
for Families & Caregivers
Families often carry a great deal: concern about independence,
communication, relationships, employment, safety, burnout,
changing support needs, and the question of how to help
without taking over.
You do not have to sort through all of that alone.
A place to work through what is happening now.
Weekly therapy support
A consistent place to talk through real-life
family challenges as they arise.
In-Person or Zoom
Choose the format that works best for your family.
Practical and individualized
Sessions are shaped around your family, the autistic
adult you support, and the concerns you are facing now.
Autistic adults grow and change.
Family roles often have to change, too.
The transition into adulthood does not automatically make
support needs disappear. In many families, the questions simply
become different—and there may be fewer clear systems, fewer
services, and less guidance than there was during childhood.
Balancing Support
& Autonomy
Work through when to step in, when to step back,
and how to respect adulthood while responding to
genuine support needs.
Navigating
Communication
Explore patterns of misunderstanding, conflict,
shutdown, overwhelm, expectations, and different
ways of communicating.
Supporting the
Whole Family
Make space for caregiver stress, uncertainty,
sibling concerns, changing family dynamics,
and the long-term picture.
This may be helpful
if you are…
-
Supporting an autistic adult who still relies on family
in important ways. -
Unsure how much help is helpful versus overwhelming
or controlling. -
Trying to respond to burnout, isolation, employment
struggles, or daily living challenges. -
Worried about your loved one’s future or what will happen
as parents and caregivers age. -
Experiencing repeated conflict or feeling that everyone
is talking past one another. -
Needing a place where your own experience can be taken
seriously, too.
What weekly sessions
can focus on
Sessions are shaped around what is happening in your family
rather than following a rigid curriculum.
- Understanding the autistic adult’s needs in context.
- Problem-solving around current family concerns and decisions.
- Developing more workable expectations and boundaries.
- Improving communication and reducing repeated conflict.
-
Preparing for changes in work, education, housing,
relationships, or caregiving. -
Helping family members care for themselves while
remaining connected and supportive.
It is to find approaches that work better for the people involved.
It is about helping families understand one another, respond more
effectively to real needs, and build relationships that can remain
sustainable over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the autistic adult have to attend?
No. Support can focus specifically on parents, caregivers,
partners, or other family members. Whether the autistic adult
participates can be discussed based on the goals of therapy.
Is this a class or support group?
This is an ongoing therapy support option rather than a
one-time educational class. Sessions can focus on whatever
is most relevant to your family that week.
Can we meet remotely?
Yes. Weekly sessions can be provided by Zoom or in person,
depending on availability and what works best for your family.
What concerns can we bring?
Communication, boundaries, independence, burnout, employment,
relationships, daily functioning, future planning, caregiver
stress, and changing family roles can all be discussed.
