Uta Frith Autism ControversyIn my first episode, I discuss the controversy surrounding autism researcher Uta Frith’s concerns about the broadening of autism and the possibility of overdiagnosis. Drawing on my experience as a therapist and autism assessor, I explore the growing influence of social media and diagnostic identity, the overlap between autistic traits and experiences such as trauma and anxiety, and the challenges clinicians face when an assessment does not result in the diagnosis someone expected. I also consider why autism must continue to be understood as a disability while recognizing the very real experiences of autistic people with lower support needs. Rather than choosing sides, I argue for a more open and nuanced conversation about what autism is, how we diagnose it, and how we ensure that autistic people across the spectrum receive the recognition and support they need.
